Oola

Oola, has been attending SCA events since 1988. She was brought by her mother and sisters to her first event at 11 years old (Pennsic) and has grown up in the community. At 25 she married Erik Douglass, (Angus the Red) who is a fighter and gave birth to their amazing son, Kai, in 2004. They enjoy bringing the entire family to events when they can.

Oola has studied, taught, and performed as a belly dancer since the spring of 1992. Her main focus is on Turkish and Egyptian belly dance disciplines, but she fuses and blends stylization and gestures of other eastern dance forms and modern western culture to create a very complex and vibrant performances. She has taken workshops and classes with some of the most famed bellydancers in America being mostly inspired by the works of Jill Parker and Ultra Gypsy, Heather Stants and Urban Tribal, Rachel Brice and The Indigo, as well a the teachings of Suhaila Salimpour.

She first studied Middle Eastern percussion from Jas (Jeff Senn of Khafif Middle Eastern Music and Dance) and then Bellydance under her sister Christine Andrews, who learned from Rayah Blackstar in 1988, after meeting her at Pennsic Wars. In 1995, teaming up with her sisters Christine and Jennifer and local scadian friends with similar interests, the folkloric style Bellydance troupe, Ghawazee Middle Eastern Music and Dance was born.Being in the troupe she learned about folkloric style bellydance as well as costuming, singing, music and Middle Eastern culture. With them she taught and performed at local events (SCA and others) until 2000. She then teamed up with Christine Andrews and Olivia Kissel to form Award winning dance troupe, Zafira Dance Company. She continues to perform and teach at SCA events and all over the world.
