Rhiannon y Bwa

Rhiannon y Bwa was born into the SCA in 1997. Before Rhiannon's birth, her progenitor, Lois Swales, had spent her formative and adult years learning about textiles from the fiber up — attending FIT (SUNY) for fashion design (strange since Rhiannon is well known as one of the frumpiest of Laurels....) and Empire State College for Weaving and Painting. While never figuring out how to make much money in her fields of interest, Lois spent over 30 years teaching adult learners how to spin, weave, natural dye and felt.

Rhiannon was extremely excited when she discovered the rich diversity of research resources on these topics provided within the SCA. She was inspired to study Fingerloop braiding (writing Compleat Anachronist 108 along with Zoe Williams on that topic) and to re-create all of the Bocsten Man (Bog Man) wool clothing, starting from two raw fleeces. Recently, she published, along with co-author Heather Blatt, a peer-reviewed academic article on Bookmarkers in Medieval Textiles and Clothing III. To see excerpts from this article: go to books.google.com and search for bookmarkers (article title: Tiny Textiles Hidden in Books: Toward a Categorization of Multiple-Strand Bookmarkers).
